BEGIN TENSE MUSIC:

But the time to act on their nervousness came a few minutes too soon. It was approximately 5:30 in the evening when the first blood-curdling cry came from below the mayor’s hut. Moments later, Centaurus and Frazz emerged through the entry hole, covered in gears and motor oil.

Shadow: Monster machines broke through the cavern walls and attacked them all. Only Centaurus and Frazz had the prowess to escape. Those who were still topside quickly sealed up the hole. I knew what had happened all along.

Frazz: The exact memory of what happened is hazy to me, but I remember strange lights shining through the cracks, just moments before the walls fell. When these things that none of us had ever seen before started drilling right through us, we knew we were even less safe there. Within moments, we scrambled to get back to the surface, but only Centaurus and I knew how to fight. Apparently, these things needed lizards to control them. So that’s what we attacked. It was a messy battle, but we cleared the path. Unfortunately, none of the others had the wisdom to follow us. So we had to leave them. Fortunately, most of the ones left behind were nihilistic anyway, so we didn’t feel bad about it. The machines also gave us the whole slave drone idea that we decided to implement many years later.
